Bored in the Hamptons

I didn't think I'd be blogging this week, but frankly, I'm bored out here. My kids are out building a fort and my husband is...no surprise here...on his BlackBerry. We are spending the holidays with my parents in Southampton, NY. I can hear hunters shooting ducks nearby, but that's about it for action. Our house is near the Peconic Bay, north (a.k.a. the wrong side) of the highway. I like our area--it's a little more rural, a little less posh than our ocean-side neighbors.

My mom's friend came over yesterday, bearing a pot of pig's feet. You heard me--pig's feet. Want some? Both she and my dad were raised on farms where the motto apparently was Don't Waste No Matter How Gross. So she had him in mind when she cooked up the feet. She threatened to bring chitlins as well, (which are, as I understand it, fried pieces of chopped pig intestine) but she must have changed her mind.

I haven't yet tried the feet. Not sure I will.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not making fun of her. She's actually someone I most admire because of her outlook on life despite her difficult upbringing. She was raised in the deep South (she's African-American) and had a tough childhood. But she managed to raise five kids by herself and every one of them are successful. Besides that, she's fun to be around and my parents adore her.

Perhaps people sitting around shootin' ducks and eatin' feet doesn't fit your mental image of the fabulous Hamptons, but there you have it.

Hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful.

Wendy, HA! The pig's feet and the shooting ducks definitely offend my vegetarian sensibilities! But, I love the idea that not everyone hanging out in the Hamptons is dining on Beef Wellington and champagne! However, it does sound like a great place to kick back and write... Enjoy your time there. At least you're not listening to cars, taxis, and ambulances driving by!

That's just so awesome. You need to write about life right there, in that spot. What a great story it would be.

Hope the rest of your vacation is great!

Hm, I always knew there was more to the Hamptons than met the eye! Enjoy your weekend.

Loved this surprising glimpse into the Hamptons. And somehow, even though my whole fmaily is from TN, I've mananged to avoid trying chitlins thus far (knock on wood) though I have seen them. Enjoy the rest of your holiday!

Oh, wow, that frightens me! Pigs feet? Yikes! I can't even bring myself to eat ham!

Just be thankful she didn't pickle dem feets! Traditionally, the chitlins is everything but the "squeal," in the deep south where I am. :) Glad you have Internet connection so you could write today. :)

Debra--You should see this meat cookbook my mom has from the 1940s. Sweet and sour heart! Braised squirrel!

Ew.

Janna--Maybe I will. Or at least I'll post some photos sometime.

Joanne--Yep, there are many different Hamptons, from PoorHampton to UberwealthyHampton.

Rachel--Most of my family is from TN, but I haven't been back for a while. It's pretty--I miss it.

Spyscribbler--At least she removed the hooves before cooking them. I think I would have just passed out if she hadn't.

Wendy, I don't blame you for not eating that! They serve both things here but I've managed to avoid them so far. We were in Ibis' family's home once when they served up the feet but they knew better than to make enough for us, lol.

Melanie--You've gotta try them before you come back to the States and report back to us. I'm not brave enough.

I don't think I could bring myself to eat the feet. Wow! It's a bit much really. You're out in my neck of the woods this Thanksgiving. Although, I don't usually make it as far as the Hamptons...I'm about 1/2 way out on the Island.

I live in the Deep South and know a lot of folks (including my family) who eat pickled pigs feet. I personally WILL NEVER and WOULD NEVER, but I know it happens and I find it repulsive. EW!

Angie--Everything but the squeal, LOL!

thedomesticfringe--I didn't realize you were a fellow LI'er (although, I'm only a part-timer).

colby--I know, ew. I remember my dad eating them when I was little. My mom would send him outside.

Yeah, that's not gonna happen. ;)
