Sir Mix-A-Lot, and my butt

Apropos of my Soundtrack post, I was dallying around on the internet the other day and ran across this question:

What song or musician has most influenced your life?

Hmm, I thought. None of them? I like music and all, but I've always considered books, or even movies, to influence me more. To Kill a Mockingbird. Gatsby. A Wrinkle in Time. Hell, even Flowers in the Attic had a more profound effect on what I wanted to do with my life. (Umm, because the story drew me in, not...well, never mind.) The question stuck with me, though, and I wanted the answer to be something profound. Dylan! Billie Holiday! Beethoven's Ode to Joy!

Alas, I'm not so deep. If I'm honest with myself, I'll have to admit it. Here lies the song that most influences my thoughts...

Oh my God, Becky! Why does this song haunt me so? Ever since 1992! I walk down the sidewalk and catch a glimpse of my reflection in a shop window--and it starts up in my head. I LIKE BIG BUTTS AND I CANNOT LIE!

Noooo! I don't even have *that* big of a butt. Still, I look into the next window, pivoting to see if it looks ROUND and BIG. And is this a good thing? Did he really like big butts? It's like Sir Mix-A-Lot is my personal insecurity fairy, whispering in my ear.

I wish it weren't so. I'd like to remove that particular song completely from memory, because no good comes of it.

Do you have a song like that, the bad penny that keeps coming back? I hope not!

I just saw him on VH1 talking about the that video and how he was dressed is brown dancing on a giant butt which basically made him a dancing turd. Made me laugh.

Ha! I'm going to keep that in mind next time I hear his song in my head!

Corniest song, I can't get out of my head - 'George in the Jungle' from the movie by the same name. See now look what I've done. I'm going to be banging my head against a wall to rid myself of that one. Every time I hear someone with the name George it starts up all over again.

As for all time favorites, "Dust in The Wind" by Kansas, "American Pie" by Don McLean, or "It Can't Rain All The Time" by Jane Siberry. I gotta stop here or I'll end up hijacking your comment section with a list. Apparently there isn't just one...(Hugs)Indigo

*shakes her bootay*

I have w i d e hips. They worked great for popping out a 9lb baby, but (< no pun intended) they make me look like a cello. And FORGET about finding slacks that fit or a skirt that doesn't make me look like a lampshade. But its a gene I inherited and the best I can do is just hit that treadmill so the bumper doesn't droop.

Oh, yeah.. back to your question, I can't listen to 80s pop music anymore. It just brings back those awkward teen memories. *shivers*

If only something else could have added to his fame. *sigh*

Shake that thang, Wendy. Own it.

I've raised 3 daughters. The song that is the bane of my existence is: HA! Click if you dare! Go ahead, you know you wanna....

This song got me through a lot of self-confidence issues. I just kept telling myself that SOMEONE out there liked big butts.

Poison from Bel Biv Devoe was another one ("never trust a big butt and a smile").
I'm sorry, what were we talking about.

LOL @ Travis!

The song I hate? MacArthur Park. Every time she says "Someone left a cake out in the rain," I mourn for a perfectly good serving of junk food gone to waste. It's just too *sniff* terrible to bear.

Bwahaha! This cracked me up. I don't have a specific song. Random bad songs tend to find their way into my brain from time to time.

Indigo--Watch out for that tree!

JLC--Your cello comment cracked me up. My daughter and husband both play the cello--I shall be thinking of you.

Janna--Duly shaken.

MeAgain--Oh no. I think I prefer Baby Got Back!

Melanie--Good point. It's the "little in the middle part" that needs work.

Christa--;)

wendy... why were you answering comments on your butt at 640 am?

WendyCinNYC said...

moonrat--Although I was indeed up and thinking about my butt at 6:40 a.m., the real answer is that my blog seems to prefer California time. No butt questions shall be answered before 9:30. It's a policy.

AmyMullis--A soggy cake? Say it isn't so.

Ha! My group of friends still dances to that song faithfully every New Year's Eve. It's done wonders for our self esteem apparently.

Some songs are like poetry to me, echoing through my lfe or reminding me of things I was going through. I'm pretty nostalgic about Joni Mitchell's Case of You, Jeff Buckley's remake of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, and probably dozens of others, really.

I must admit, I do love that song, along with Kelis' "Milkshake."

Because really, my milkshake does bring all the boys to the yard. Doesn't yours?

LOL! I'm telling The Husband he's got to stop talking about my backside in such a negative way ... it is an asset! Of growing proportions!

Rachel--Ha! It's a great NYE song.

Tawna--Milkshake is another one of those songs!

Cynthia--There you go. Maybe you should have it as background music in your house, just as a reminder.

Spammers--I shake my fist at you!

Oh! Sir Mix A Lot! J and I go through phases where we get a song in our heads and cannot stop singing it - and just as one of us has broken the habit, the other one sings it again. There are about 12 songs on that rotation. "Who's that lady?" is one of them. I can't remember the rest right now - and don't want to try. :)

haha- this song was written for me I believe ;-)

I keep hearing that "Please Don't Leave Me" song...it annoys me.

It's not just the bruthas that like 'em.

Give me a woman with a real butt any day over one of those skinny things that look like a frog's butt in a bikini.
